Profile of the Freshman Class Entering Rice University August 1973"The quota of 630 entering freshmen was filled from a total of approximately 2,400 applications. This year's class is composed of 29% women and 71% men. Primary consideration was given to the applicant's scholastic record, the personal interview, the evaluation by teachers and counselors and the College Board scores. "As in previous years, the class represents an intensive competitive background. Scholastic standings, drawn from high school records, show 116 valedictorians and 48 salutatorians. Twenty percent of the class were National Merit finalists, 90 were designated National Merit Scholars and 5 students are National Achievement Scholars. Of the 90 National Merit Scholars, 48 were sponsored by Rice University. Only those finalists who designate Rice as their first choice are eligible for Rice sponsored scholarships. "Most of the students who are successful in being offered admission confirm their academic potential by strong high school records. Two-thirds of the entering class ranked in the top 5% of their high school class, and only 4% ranked below the upper quartile of their class. Over 26% of the entering freshmen had Scholastic Aptitude Test scores averaging over 700, but balancing this, 15% of the class had scores below 600. These students presented unique experience or exceptional creativity. The Rice Admissions Committee seeks to assemble a diverse and stimulating intellectual community." |
